Free Wi-Fi service in public housing estates

Public rental housing (PRH) tenants will have more choices of location where they can enjoy free access of the Internet through Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) service. In addition to the free WiFi service currently provided at about 120 PRH estates of the Housing Authority (HA) by an information and communication technology (ICT) service vendor, another ICT service vendor will provide similar free service at 45 PRH estates, including 26 estates not covered by the service at present. The new service will be introduced in phases with the first batch of ten estates starting on 17 April 2008 and the rest by August this year. By that time, free WiFi service will be available to PRH tenants in almost all PRH estates. While the existing service is provided at ground floor lift lobbies and adjoining external areas of PRH blocks, the new service will be mainly at outdoor recreational areas. All the hotspots are clearly denoted by "Free WiFi" stickers. For estates served by both the existing and the new ICT service vendors, tenants will have more choices.
The HA acts as a facilitator in the provision of free WiFi service in PRH estates. Interested ICT service vendors install and operate the systems at their own costs whereas the HA provides the basic communal facilities such as power supplies, cable ducts and conduits. |
Housing Schemes for Fostering Harmonious Families in Public Housing

To foster stronger family bondage, the Housing Authority has approved a range of enhanced housing schemes to accord priority to those applying for public rental housing together with their elderly dependants and to relax the policies for eligible public housing tenants applying for transfer, addition and amalgamation of tenancies. The Schemes are launched in October 2007.

Community Participation Scheme - Action Seedling

The Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA) has always been committed to providing affordable public housing for the needy people in Hong Kong. We strive to achieve sustainability by taking proactive measures in the implementation of our public housing programmes. Throughout the planning, design and construction stages, we give due consideration to factors such as functional performance and cost effectiveness of the buildings, as well as environmental concerns like greening. Our aim is to provide functional, safe and comfortable public housing, thereby raising the living standard of our tenants.
To effectively accomplish our mission, we need the support of the construction industry, residents and community organizations. Towards this end, we have launched a Community Participation Scheme to enhance our partnership with the contractors, public housing tenants and the community at large. A recent initiative under the Scheme is "Action Seedling" which encourages community participation in the greening of new housing estates at an early stage.
"Action Seedling" will be rolled out in 14 public housing projects due for completion in the next two years. Through Estate Management Advisory Committees, local schools and community organizations, seedling plants will be given out by the HA and its building contractors to participants who will nurture the plants at home until they are fit for transplanting into the planters of the new estates.
We believe that apart from creating a greener and more pleasant environment, the programme will also help foster a greater sense of belonging among the residents and the community. Furthermore, it will provide an opportunity for our contractors to play their part in greening and environmental protection.

Education on fire safety is always among the top priorities of the work of the Housing Department. Various kinds of activities are being organized to enhance tenants' awareness on fire prevention. The Community Promotion Scheme is also launched to encourage non-profit making bodies to organize fire safety activities in public housing estates.

The HA has been incorporating green concepts and principles into the planning, design and management of its public rental housing (PRH) estates to improve tenants' living environment and enhance cost-effectiveness. We also organize a wide range of educational and publicity programmes to raise PRH tenants' and estate management staff's environmental awareness and encourage them to join hands in building a green community.
