New Lifts Installed in Old Public Housing Estates (Monday, 16 June 2008)

As part of its efforts to provide a better living environment for tenants in public rental housing, the Housing Department is installing two new lifts in a 30-year-old block at Tai Hing Estate, Tuen Mun.

Officiating at the launching ceremony of one lift today (June 16), the Secretary for Transport and Housing, Ms Eva Cheng said the lift installation project aimed to provide a better access to the residence of the tenants living in Hing Wai House particularly the elderly. "I am pleased to see one new lift has been completed while the building works for another will complete by the end of this year."

"The new lifts adopt an energy-efficient variable frequency drive system which can save over 30% of electricity," she added.

Tai Hing Estate has seven domestic blocks. Lift modernization works are being carried out at the other six blocks currently with lift services. "The lift modernization works for half of them have been completed while the remaining half will be completed by 2011," Ms Cheng said.

The Housing Authority and the Housing Department would continue its efforts to provide a better living environment for public rental housing tenants, Ms Cheng said, adding that a number of improvement projects had been implemented in last few years, including a scheme to provide  tenants with proactive and comprehensive maintenance services, rewiring inside domestic flats, upgrading of CCTV and replacement of underground water supply pipes and drainage pipes.

Together with another officiating guest, the Chairman of Tuen Mun District Council the Hon. Lau Wong-fat, Ms Cheng visited an elderly tenant living in Hing Wai House after the ceremony.
