Edward NG is an Architect (UK) and a Professor at Department of Architecture, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. A Commonwealth Scholar, he obtained his PhD on Architecture and Environmental Design from Cambridge University. Since then, he has been practicing as an architect, and lecturing and contributing in various universities in the world including Sheffield University in the United Kingdom and MIT in the USA.

Edward's area of specialty is in Daylighting Design in Cities, and the Environmental Design of Architecture. In the last few years, he has worked extensively to seek ways to an understanding of environmental design in high density cities, including an extensive study of the historical basis of the building regulations in Hong Kong on the provision of light and air for healthy living.

Edward is the author of the new UVA method for daylight design. He is also working on the parametric effects of building morphology, density, skylines, site coverage and plot ratio on the environmental performance of cities using advanced computational simulation, theoretical modelling as well as design facilities like wind tunnel and artificial sky.

A consultant and advisor of many research laboratories, design offices and government agencies in the world, Edward has contribute to their development of codes and design policies. A Visiting Professor at Xian Jiaotong University, China, he is also helping to design prototype schools that are environmental and ecologically friendly, "low tech" and "advanced science".

Mr K S WONG is the founding chairman of the Committee on Environment & Sustainable Development, Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA), and a council member of the Professional Green Building Council (PGBC) in Hong Kong.

He pursued his research study in Professor Raymond J Cole's Environmental Research Group under the Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture programme in the UBC School of Architecture, Canada.

In practice, as previously associated with Anthony Ng Architects Ltd., he was the project architect and environmental research coordinator of Verbena Heights, a high-density public housing project integrated with comprehensive environmental design and research approach. Verbena Heights was awarded with the HKIA Silver Medal in 1998 and the ARCASIA (Architects Regional Council Asia) Gold Medal 1999-2000. He was also the project director of the research consultancy on regulation review of lighting and ventilation in buildings for the Buildings Department HKSAR.

He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Also as a practicing architect, he is currently associated with Ronald Lu & Partners (HK) Ltd.

Mr. John NG is an Architect and Town Planner. He is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, and Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Hong Kong Institute of Planners and the Royal Town Planning Institute. He is also an Honorary Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture, University of Hong Kong.

John is a Chief Architect with the Hong Kong Housing Authority and has extensive experience in the planning, design and construction of high-density public housing and related facilities in new towns including Shatin, Tuen Mun and Tin Shui Wai, as well as redevelopment projects on Hong Kong Island and in urban Kowloon.

In recognition of the excellence of some of these projects the Hong Kong Institute of Architects awarded the Silver Medal and Merit awards in 1982, 1987 and 1989 and this was followed by the 2001 Special award and 2003 Merit Award of the Hong Kong Institute of Engineer (Structural Division).

In Hong Kong's first Open Architectural Design Competition of Public Housing in the New Eva 2001 the team led by John were awarded Third Prize and in 2003 the Annual Award of the Hong Kong Institute of Planners for the planning of a sustainable community.

Throughout his career John has been dedicated in the pursuit of innovated design and sustainable development and believes that planning and architecture must serve the community and enhance the built environment.

Sik Hung Ng studied psychology and sociology at the University of Hong Kong, and then social psychology at the University of Bristol, where he obtained his PhD in 1978. He was appointed to a Chair in Psychology at Victoria University of Wellington (1992), and a Chair in Social Psychology at the City University of Hong Kong (2000). In recent years, his research has focused on positive ageing, inter-generational relations, and the bicultural self. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and President-Elect of the International Association of Language and Social Psychology. The present paper is an attempt to apply social scientific concepts to the understanding of the impacts of housing on residents' quality of life.

Mr NIAM Chiang-meng is the Chief Executive Officer of Singapore's Housing & Development Board. He is also a board member of several organisations, namely the SMRT Corporation Ltd, Singapore MRT Ltd, TIBS Holdings Ltd and Keppel Land.

Prior to his current appointment with the Housing & Development Board, Mr Niam had a distinguished career with various other Government Ministries and Statutory Boards. He had, amongst other appointments, served as Chairman of the Singapore Broadcasting Authority, Permanent Secretary with the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, Permanent Secretary of Law, Deputy Secretary with the Ministry of Health and Vice President (News) with the Television Corporation of Singapore.

For his outstanding contributions to the Civil Service, Mr Niam was awarded the Public Administration Medal, Silver in 1995 and Gold in 2001. In that same year, 2001, he also received the Civil Service 20-Year Long Service Award for his dedicated service and commitment.

Mr Niam graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Social Science degree in Economics. He obtained a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University in 1991.
