From Bare Rocks to Lively Communities – Choi Fook and Choi Tak Estates

Photo: The HA's Choi Wan Road public housing development project in Kowloon Bay. Choi Fook and Choi Tak Estates, both completed last year, together with Choi Ying Estate which had its intake earlier in 2008, constitute the Housing Authority's large-scale public housing development project in Choi Wan Road, Kowloon Bay. Some five years ago, the site was still an old quarry; but it has become a green and vibrant community today. Let's take a close look of the two new estates which are a fine blend with the natural environment and boast comprehensive modern facilities.

Phase 1 of Choi Fook Estate consists of three domestic blocks, a five-storey car park and a district elderly community centre. Next to it is Choi Tak Estate which comprises eight domestic blocks and a shopping centre.

The distinct feature of the original landscape has been preserved in the design of the two estates. Large boulders and special stones are put in the open space as reminiscence of the old quarry.

To strengthen the sense of community, the walkways in both estates have been designed to promote pedestrian circulation and provide easy access to estate facilities and green areas.

The green concept runs through the details of the domestic blocks. For example, the flat unit plates are adorned with graphics of green leaves. The mailroom labels and decoration in the main lobbies also provide a touch of nature.

Residents can find daily necessities and general services conveniently in Choi Tak Shopping Centre, which has incorporated various environmentally-friendly designs. For example, the ceiling windows let in sunlight and facilitate natural ventilation.
