The Housing Authority (HA) has been granted recognitions for "Sustainable Repairs" and "Innovative Repairs" in the Award for Excellence in Concrete Repair 2011. The annual event, organised by the Hong Kong Concrete Repair Association, aims to commend outstanding concrete repair projects. It also offers stakeholders an opportunity to share best practices and exchange the latest solutions to concrete repairs.
The "Sustainable Repairs" award was claimed by our concrete repair works in Wo Lok Estate, Kwun Tong. The project aimed to treat the toilet slabs which had deteriorated seriously due to prolonged wetting. Sustainable solutions to the problem include the use of fast-setting high performance concrete and the installation of sacrificial anodes attached with a Radio Frequency Identification. The former made it possible for the residents to use the toilets in the evening of the day of repair. The latter helps protect the steel bars in the concrete from rusting and thus drastically prolongs the life of the concrete.
The "Innovative Repairs" award was granted to the waterproofing work of Oi Man Estate in Ho Man Tin. The water leakage at the basements of the buildings was too serious to be resolved by traditional waterproofing methods. By using a multi-pulse sequencing system, a state-of-the-art electro-osmosis technique, we managed to eradicate the problem.
At the award presentation ceremony held on 27 May, Chief Manager/Management (Support Services) Dr H W Pang, who oversaw the two projects, shared his experience in maintaining aged buildings. He stressed the importance of keeping abreast with the latest concrete repair technologies adopted worldwide, while integrating the knowledge with the local experience.
