Green Delight in Estates

Highlights of First Cycle of GDE

Year 2011 marked an important milestone in our GDE programme, which has completed its first cycle after five phases, covering some 150 estates. Partnered with the Conservancy Association, Friends of the Earth (HK) and Green Power, around 10,000 residents and school students have been recruited and trained as Green Estate Ambassadors to convey environmental knowledge and guide other residents toward a green lifestyle. To evaluate the effectiveness and identify room for improvement, we have conducted survey every year to measure the impacts of our GDE to the community. We are delighted to obtain encouraging results in the first cycle of this territory-wide campaign. Achievements of each phase of the GDE programme in its first cycle are summarised below:

Phase

Summary of the Achievements

Phase 1 – Estate Clean Up

The survey result revealed that 72% respondents considered themselves becoming more knowledgeable about environmental issues. The corresponding percentage for tenants from housing estates not taking part in the programme was only 67%.

Phase 2 – Waste Recycling

About 300 young PRH tenants were recruited as Green Estate Ambassadors. They were properly trained on environmental protection concepts to become trainers to convey environmental knowledge and promote green messages in PRH estates. The survey result indicated that over 73% of the tenants were more knowledgeable about environmental issues after participating in the programme, a slight increase from a year ago. About 70% of the respondents practiced separation of domestic waste at the source, while 65% used recycle bags.

Phase 3 – Energy Saving

The accumulated number of Green Estate Ambassadors jumped to about 6,000 tenants. The survey result showed that around 70% of the tenants had the habit of separating recyclables from the wastes before disposal; while over 70% had the habit of bringing their own bags for shopping, representing a 15% increase since the launch of the GDE programme. It also showed that around 50% of the residents considered themselves having higher level of consciousness of energy saving compared with the previous year.

Phase 4 - Reduction in the Use of Plastic Bags

The survey result concluded that around 90% of our PRH tenants had developed their habit of bringing their own bags for shopping and above 85% of them had the habits of reducing energy consumption and water consumption.

Phase 5 – Carbon Reduction

The accumulated number of Green Estate Ambassadors around 10,000, including tenants and school students. The survey result showed that nearly 90% of the tenants had built up a habit on reducing energy consumption.

It is rewarding to see that through the activities in the GDE programme, a strong bond has been built between the residents, the green groups and HA in the green pursuit.

Upon completion of the fifth phase of the GDE programme in mid-2011, a stakeholder workshop was held in early 2012 to review the programme. Around 120 stakeholders including EMAC members, residents, estate management staff and green group representatives have participated in the workshop. Participants were generally supportive to the programme and suggested areas for improvement. Incorporating the comments and suggestions gathered for further improvement, a new phase of the GDE programme was launched in mid-2012.
