Preface

This year marks the golden jubilee of Hong Kong's public housing development.

Senior citizens will still remember the tragic fire that gutted the entire Shek Kip Mei squatter area on Christmas Eve 50 years ago, which led to the start of the public housing programme. More than half a century later, over three million people now benefit from the programme.

Over the past few decades and with the community's support, the Hong Kong Housing Authority has successfully developed new towns, and transformed the basic resettlement blocks of the 1950s and 1960s into modern housing estates with comprehensive facilities. In more recent years, it has greatly reduced the number of families on the waiting list for public rental housing, and slashed the average waiting time to less than three years.

Besides providing adequate and affordable housing to those who in genuine need, the Authority is working towards the establishment of a new culture in the management of public housing by heeding the needs of its customers more closely. It will strive to provide the services and products that will help create better homes and communities.

At this exhibition, you can walk through all the major developments of the public housing programme, and see how they have contributed to improving the quality of life for so many people, and to building a stable and progressive society.
