Resource Conservation and Waste Reduction in Action

Graphic Decoration Cement Substitute-PFA
In the past year, we saved 22 000 tonnes of cement. We did this by using a substitute called Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA) as a partial cement replacement. Using PFA is doubly beneficial to the environment because PFA is also a waste product from Hong Kong's coal-fired power stations. Next year, we will increase the use of PFA by increasing the proportion of cement being replaced. We estimate that this will save 30 000 tonnes of cement.

Collect Waste Paper for Recycling
We collected significantly more waste paper for recycling than previous years. In total, we collected about 428 800 kg of waste paper from our offices' 343 collection bins. We also beat our paper consumption target by 1.5% with 8.5% of our photocopying paper coming from recycled sources.

Landscape Design and Green Slopes

Outstanding Green Design Award 2000
We won the Silver Award in the Landscape Design category of the Outstanding Green Design Award 2000 for our Ma Hang Village Phases 2 & 3 Development Project in Stanley.

Graphic Decoration Green Treatment to Slopes
We now have in place measures that will increase the number of green slopes. We carefully monitor the need to use shotcreting for slope maintenance works. In the past year, we provided green treatments to 4 previously concrete surfaced slopes. Over the next 4 years we plan to treat another 220 slopes. The work on 50 of these will be completed in the coming year.

Community Participation

Waste Recycling Campaign
171 estates participated in Phase 4 of the Waste Recycling Campaign. We presented awards to the housing estates with the best recycling record. These included the HA Estate Champion Award and the HA Merits Awards.

Graphic Decoration Tree Planting Days
With the help from the community during Tree Planting Days, last year we planted 447 trees in existing estates.

Green Estate Photo Competition
We received about 500 entries for our Green Estate Photo Competition. The winning entries were exhibited at different commercial centres to showcase and increase awareness of environmental improvements to our estates.

Graphic Decoration Environmental Family Competition
Last year, we co-organised the Environmental Family Competition with Green Power. The prize for the winners will be a trip to visit environmentally conscious families in Japan.

Environmental Family Competition
In co-operation with Friends of the Earth, we presented the Environmental Protection Award to the commercial tenants with the best achievements in environmental protection.
