Community Awareness
We are actively seeking to improve environmental awareness amongst our staff and residents. We encourage their involvement in environmental improvement initiatives, as well as organise a wide range of training programmes and seminars on various environmental subjects. In the past year, the public were made aware about the implementation of greening initiatives in public housing estates through an RTHK interview with our Environmental Manager. The Environmental Manager was also interviewed for articles appearing in the Hong Kong Economic Journal and Wen Wai Po newspaper. During these interviews, the Environmental Manager explained HA's Environmental Policy and management structure behind it. The Environmental Manager also gave examples of our environmental achievements as well as details about community-based environmental awareness-raising programmes, campaigns and activities. Furthermore, over the past year, about 600 Housing Department staff attended six seminars on environmental issues under the Environmental Awareness Training Plan.

In recent years we have organised various promotional campaigns. These include the Green Living Campaign, the Waste Recycling Campaign and Green Home Visits. A Waste Product Reconstruction Competition was also held at primary schools. Through such events we aim to raise the awareness of our tenants and the public on the benefits of waste reduction. These events also encourage their participation in reducing waste. We value the contributions made by our staff and residents to our environmental efforts.

Awareness Campaign Highlights
Campaigns carried out in 2000 were:

All rental estates participated in Phase 4 of the Waste Recycling Campaign organised by the ECC. This was a 2.4% increase over the previous year.
Phase 3 of the Waste Recycling Credit Scheme commenced in October 2000. Phase 3 added metal, glass and clothing to collection of plastic, paper and aluminium started in Phase 2. Phase 4 of the Campaign, emphasising waste reduction, will start in July 2001.
An Environmental Family Competition was co-organised with Green Power. About 100 entries were received. The winners will be able to visit Japan to meet with environmentally conscious Japanese families.
A Green Estate Photo Competition was co-organised with the media. About 500 entries were received and the winning entries were displayed at various commercial centres.
An Environmental Protection Award (co-organised with Friends of the Earth) was presented, to encourage commercial tenants to participate in environmental protection.
The Green Estate Exchange Square Scheme started in March 2001 to encourage tenants to bring in recyclable waste to exchange for souvenirs. 22 estates participated in the Scheme.

The Clean Neighbourhood Campaign Phases 2 (July 1999 to May 2000) and 3 (July 2000 to June 2001) to organise clean-up activities and promote cleanliness in estates and commercial centres (including the "Cleanest Commercial Tenant" and "Cleanest Shopping Centre" competitions).
A Green Housekeeping Campaign and paper-saving competition launched in-house for our staff, under the HA Environmental Awards Scheme, as well as improving awareness through a "green corner" on the office intranet and various exhibitions and seminars to increase staff awareness of environmental issues.
