HA has therefore proposed to redevelop the entire estate, a process that involves the complete replanning and rebuilding of the area with five reception sites in the vicinity. The reception portion of the redeveloped old Wah Fu Estate is scheduled to be completed by 2040. The decision to redevelop involves far more than simply practical construction considerations. Around 24 000 people currently call Wah Fu Estate home, and they must all be rehoused as the development phases progress. Furthermore, this is an estate where hundreds and thousands have grown up, and carries traces and precious memories of past generations that are worthy of preservation. Indeed, one of the first tasks undertaken by HA as it began planning redevelopment was to engage current residents, drawing on their fond memories and their creative ideas in the planning and design process for the new Wah Fu Estate. Recognising the importance of the estate in shaping a community and a local culture, in 2019 we completed a project titled %u201cA Cultural Journey through Half-Century Wah Fu%u201d to celebrate the past. At the same time, we kicked off a series of engagement workshops as well as a questionnaire, newsletters and video-shooting, all aimed at bringing together HA representatives, Wah Fu residents and other local groups to identify and preserve the most valuable historical and cultural elements of the estate in its redevelopment. The goal is not for the redeveloped estate to be brand-new, with no traces of what went before, but rather to build its history into the reception estates and the new Wah Fu Estate so that original residents will feel a connection with their forebears as far back as the 1960s. An important part of this process was captured in our series of Wah Fu residents%u2019 newsletters. The first four in the series were issued under the theme %u201cRedevelopment on the Road%u201d. Organised thematically, they shared memories of Wah Fu residents and descriptions of their social links as well as the individual life journeys of those who grew up on the estate. The fifth and sixth newsletters, under the theme %u201cSubject of Wah Fu%u201d, were focused on identifying the unique public spaces and architectural features of the original Wah Fu Estate.
