The Safety Climate within an organisation represents a summary of its employees’ perception on safety and health. The Safety Climate Index Survey (SCI) is a tool which can be used to benchmark the existing safety and health culture within an organisation. It uses a questionnaire to gauge staff opinion on the key aspects of the management of safety and health within their workplace—allowing contractors to assess the overall safety climate of their organisation. SCI is a quantitative indicator: a higher SCI representing a more positive safety climate. A plan to improve the management of occupational safety can then be drawn up based on analysis of the survey results.
