"Wah Fu Half-Century Cultural Journey" Deposited in the "Humanity Bank"

"Wah Fu Half-Century Cultural Journey" submitted by the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA) has recently been selected for the "Humanity Bank" set up by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA).

The "Humanity Bank" has been formed to commemorate the 65^th Anniversary of the HKIA this year for collecting and recognising the contribution to humanity by architects around the world. The Bank also serves as a recruiting and experience sharing platform. The assessment panel has selected 50 submissions for the Bank, including voluntary works, community workshops, installations and building projects.

Completed in 1968 and built on a hilly topography of Hong Kong South, Wah Fu Estate is the first public housing estate developed with a "township" concept. Dr Donald Liao, the architect of the estate, adopted designs of platforms, staircases, slopes, linkages and "sky lobbies" within housing blocks to align with the landscape design, in a view to facilitating residents to stroll freely among these areas, creating communal public spaces and connecting residents. The planning and architectural design was very forward-looking in the 1960s.

Wah Fu Estate is about to be re-developed after half a century. To preserve the estate’s history, cultural heritage, stories and memories of generations of tenants, the HA organised the "Wah Fu Half-Century Cultural Journey" in 2019. The activity also marked the beginning of an extensive community engagement exercise for estate tenants and stakeholders to formulate the conservation and redevelopment plan, and played a contributing role in cultural heritage.
